Grant Park - Zip Code 30312
The Grant Park neighborhood was named for Lemuel P. (L.P.) Grant, a civil engineer for the Georgia Railroad who has been called the "Father of Atlanta." Grant Park, as a neighborhood, began to be populated in the 1890's by middle and some upper middle class families.
A restoration trend began in Grant Park in the early 1970's and the neighborhood began to blossom in the late 80s and into the 1990s. Demolition of older homes has largely been halted and new construction seeks to conform to the character of the old neighborhood. During the 1980's, the entire area, both north and south of I-20, was placed on the national register of historic places. Families flock to this neighborhood favorite, which offers the most diverse park terrain in the city.
The Scene. Shady ravines, cozy glens and abundant small hills are the big attractions here. More low-key than Piedmont Park, Grant Park offers plenty of weekday serenity; weekend crowds impinge on personal space. Gazebos and open pavilions provide respite from exercise and a great place to barbecue. Zoo Atlanta and the adjacent Cyclorama occupy the southern half of the park..
The Draw. Sports options include basketball, baseball, soccer and tennis. Three public pools quash the heat of summer. Open space for Frisbees and kites abounds.
