Brookhaven is an unincorporated city located on the western edge of Dekalb County adjoining Sandy Springs and Buckhead. Brookhaven is west of Chamblee, north of Buford Highway and south of I-285. While Brookhaven is bisected by Peachtree Road, the historic part of the community is located north of the road, and stretches to Windsor Parkway on the north, Peachtree-Dunwoody Road on the west, and Mabry Road on the east. Brookhaven is home to two golf courses, the Capital City Club listed on the National Register of Historical Places and Peachtree Golf Club.

With a median household income of $236,393, Brookhaven has become one of metropolitan Atlanta's most affluent communities. Historically, there were modest neighborhoods surrounding the historic estates near the Capital City Club, particularly south of Peachtree Road. However, the recent influx of new developments in the Ashford Park, Brittany, Brookhaven Fields, Drew Valley and Lynwood neighborhoods has reduced the number of housing units for the lower-middle class. The modest homes in the Brookhaven Fields neighborhood south of Peachtree Road around Roxboro Road and Colonial Drive have been largely replaced with upper-middle class and upper-class housing that is typical of high dual income families.

Brookhaven is less than two miles (3 km) from Lenox Square Mall and Phipps Plaza, located in Atlanta's Buckhead district and two of the most affluent shopping centers in the United States. Within Brookhaven, there are two commercial districts. The first is along Peachtree Road, immediately east of Lenox Square Mall and Phipps Plaza. This district primarily consists of small retail centers and restaurants. A new development retail and housing development called TOWN Brookhaven is located at the intersection of Cross Keys Road and Peachtree Road. Other districts include the Dresden district, located along Dresden Drive, anchored by the Brookhaven Mix and Brookhaven Village developments.

Brookhaven has several wonder parks that include:

·         Blackburn Park, 3493 Ashford-Dunwoody Rd. Includes the Blackburn Tennis Center; this 49-acre DeKalb County park has tennis and basketball courts, soccer fields, picnic areas and trails.

·         Brookhaven Park, 4158 Peachtree Rd. 9-acre DeKalb County Park with multi-use courts, playground, picnic area and trails.

·         Keswick Park, Hildon Circle. A 45-acre park that is in the City of Chamblee on the edge of Brookhaven.

·         Murphy Candler Park, 1551 W Nancy Creek Dr. 135-acre DeKalb County park known primarily for baseball and football, but it also has a pool and lake.
